GEOPHYSICS FOR DAMS

What is Geophysics applied to dams?

In the initial phase, geophysics is essential to identify the most suitable terrain for its implantation, making it possible to recognize unstable structures in the subsurface, such as faults, fractured and/or karst rocks. While in the monitoring stage, its main function is to assist in the detection of discontinuities and continuous monitoring of the degree of saturation of the structure.

Therefore, dam geophysics is a tool used as a way to increase control by expanding the area and number of data.

How does geophysics protect dams?

The geophysical investigation for dams stands out as an important tool for accident prevention and detection of structural problems, and can be adopted both in the design phase and in the monitoring of the structure already installed.

Methods Geophysical

There are different geophysical methods that make it possible to carry out a subsurface scan, allowing the identification of anomalies and failures in the dam structure. Among the methods used, we can mention seismic refraction and geoelectrical methods, such as spontaneous potential and, in particular, electroresistivity.

Geoscan has equipment that performs the monitoring of dams in an automated way, 24 hours a day and has a high precision in identifying anomalies along the dam structure.
