The soils resistivity test is a measure of how the soil resist to an electricity flow. It is a critical factor in the design of systems that depend on current passing through the earth’s surface. Understanding the resistivity of the soil is necessary to design the grounding system, for an electrical substation or for lightning conductors as an example.

Soils have very different values of resistivity, because they have different characteristics such as:

    • Compositional variation
    • Particle size
    • Degree of compaction

In general, the soil consists of several layers, each having a specific resistivity value and thickness.
